Depending on the styles of music you are playing, there are times where you will need to finger pick. I can think of examples in several genres where fingerpicking is used. You will see it a lot in acoustic music including folk and acoustic blues. If you are famaliar with Guitarzoom.com’s newest course- Acoustic Blues Guitar or Marty Schwartz’s Acoustic Blues Guitar DVD set then you know that style of music relies heavily on fingerpicking. You will also see it in rock and metal as well. James Hetfield of Metallica fingerpicks the intro to Fade to Black and Nothing Else Matters. Slash fingerpicks the intro to Anastasia. Jimmy Page did a lot of fingerpicking as well.
