Five Mistakes All Beginner Guitar Players Make

If you are a beginner guitar player, you'll want to pay attention to this.  There are 5 main obstacles that ALL beginners face.

  1. Changing Chords–  Look, first of all, the chord shapes themselves are hardly intuitive. If you've never played guitar before, they're unlike anything you've done before. And of course changing chords means abandoning that shape and changing it into a new one in a different area on the neck.
  2. Getting strings to ring out properly–  Getting Strings to “Ring Out” Properly Playing a chord is one thing. But can you make it sound the way it should? Or, as I like to put it, can you you make your chords “ring out”? This is such a common problem! And it's all about proper hand position so that ALL your strings ring out. Common causes include fingers not pressing with the right pressure.
  3. Developing Rhythm–  Contrary to what you might think, rhythm CAN be taught. I don't care if you think you don't have a musical bone in your body, I have a way of teaching rhythm that gets you in sync quickly and naturally. Believe me, EVERYONE has this natural rhythm inside them
  4. Get up and running quickly–  Look, the real reason many beginners quit too early is because they get BORED. (Truth be told, boredom is the real dream-killer, not lack of skill.) This can happen when you try to learn from a book, or if you're trying to teach yourself. Nothing wrong with books or self-taught musicians … BUT … if you don't find a way to learn the essential skills by using stuff you already like and know, then it's too easy to get discouraged because the learning process starts to feel like, well, work.
  5. Learning things in the right order-  Listen, there's only so many things you have to worry about when learning guitar. However, they can become overwhelming if you don't learn them in a structured, logical fashion.
