I havent posted any riffs in a while and thought it would be fun to do one. Here is a classic riff from the mighty Metallica. From the 1984 album Ride the Lighting, the song Fade to Black was the first single to be released from the album.
Other interesting facts about the song include it being a mainstay on the setlist for live shows, the last song that former bassist Jason Newsted played with the band when he left in November of 2000. The most memorable fact though is on August 8, 1992, James Hetfield accidentally stepped into the path of one of the chemical flames that had been rigged to shoot from the lip of the stage while playing “Fade to Black”. Hetfield’s guitar protected him from the full force of the blast; however, the fire engulfed his left side, burning his hand, arm, eyebrows, face and hair. He suffered second and third-degree burns.
The intro riff is a great exercise in picking and will help with your stretching as well. Check out the tab below and once you have it down, try and play along with Hetfield.
